Study of the decarbonization potential by generating renewable energy with own resources
The objective of
this study, which the Comarca del Berguedà (province of Barcelona) recently carried out, was to
identify the
organic resources that can be a source of renewable energy, know
where they are, and
estimate the potential for substituting fossil fuels. With this, the territorial agents have been able to
identify strategic challenges for the sustainable development of the region with which waste is managed,
energy is decarbonized, and jobs are generated. Through an
energy balance, it has been calculated that
the generation of 100% renewable energy with own resources is feasible.
- The potential for generating renewable energy or fuels from waste could cover 100% of the consumption needs for this type of energy.
- The generation of electrical energy with photovoltaics is much higher than what the region consumes
Potential for energy substitution with own renewable resources in the Berguedà region

Many organic resources in the region can be sources of renewable energy: agricultural and forestry biomass, livestock waste, by-products from the food industry, sewage sludge, organic fraction of municipal waste. The information has been visualized on maps that help define strategies and locations.

The estimations are made based on information contained in land use maps, exploitation maps, and environmental zoning maps, wind maps, aggregated consumption data, and business censuses, among other data, with which
algorithms can be generated to calculate the generation potential with the Syner tool.
