First bioeconomy project accelerated in the context of the BIOBOOST project
The results of the first bioeconomy project accelerated in the context of the Bioboost project are now available: Alcarràs Bioproductors.
Bioboost is a bioeconomy project accelerator that
offers strategic assistance services specialized in bioeconomy for the development of
systemic projects, with a high impact on the territory, with the aim of
reducing investment risk and execution times.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Alcarràs Bioproductors, an
association (SAT) located in Alcarràs, Lleida, made up of 150 livestock farming families (600 farms)
from the bovine and porcine sector, who have joined forces to
treat the
excrement and plant remains from their farms and agricultural holdings jointly. To this end, they are buying 150 Ha of land that they are
turning into the first biopolygon in Catalonia, which, in addition to housing a
composting plant, will also house the
biogas plant and a set of innovative
industrial activities with a biotechnological base: bioproducts, biomaterials, bioenergy.
BARRIERS IDENTIFIED TO BE SOLVED WITH BIOBOOST SERVICES
All the project’s initiatives are innovative, form part to some extent of the Bioeconomy Strategy of Catalonia and involve a high degree of experimentation and learning in business models and governance systems. Specifically, the following barriers are identified:
- Complexity of administrative procedures to obtain activity licenses.
- Lack of capacity/vision to link with other projects in the area (and other sources of organic resources) to address the viability of using biogas and fertilizers.
BUSINESS PROPOSALS
Through a holistic approach, a series of solutions have been found for
new models of doing business with their surplus resources that
maximize benefits while promoting benefits for the entire ecosystem:
Proposal to expand the business model of the biogas plant as fuel for tractors: “gas station” at the biogas plant.
Analysis of the technological alternatives compatible with the existing markets in the territory and of the associated business models to
expand the options for using biogas and to reach the maximum production capacity of the digester,
producing liquefied biogas (compressed)
for tractors. This is a business initiative that promotes:
- Strategic innovation line in transformation of agricultural engines.
- Innovation in public aid measures for the decarbonization of agricultural activity.
- Innovation in forms and businesses of distribution of alternative renewable fuels.
Production of bio-fertilizers: proposal to expand the market.
Transformation of the current line of compost sales into a business of production and s
ale of high-end bio-fertilizers through strategic alliances with the specialized sector
to produce certified organic compost, and
ammonium sulfate from the “streeping” of the digestate,
for fertigation. This is about
valorizing some
by-products developing a potential business market in which they are an important part, also promoting:
- Organic and regenerative agriculture as a production model (and CO₂ capture).
- Propose public incentive measures to encourage the use of this type of product.
- Technological innovation lines and aid for business development.
